Millions of years of evolutionary natural processes have changed the shapes and structures
of micro-organisms, into abundant varieties. It is a fantastic discovery through
the technological marvel of nature. I personally believe that it is a new technique
to model future ceramics based on the patterns and designs of micro-organisms. I
examine nature closely, with an imaginative, scientific, and curious eye, seeking
to duplicate that which I observe. My art is a reciprocal process, linking art to
nature and nature to art. I see natural forms when examining the micro-organisms
and the underlying structural order that produces each individual form.
The character of my art is determined by my conception of what I see, and by what
I actually feel constitutes nature. What I look at can be contrasted with what I
do not. In my work, there is no sense of allegiance to ceramic history, nor is there
anything that resembles the latest theories of post-modernist thought. There is irony,
no image, no narrative. I do not intend to be disdainful, but I seek to follow my
own instinct and focus on what is meaningful to me. My view of nature is an ordered
and rational one. My forms are harmonious and rythmic with the emphasis on the whole
rather than on the parts. My work is neither manufactured nor natural, it is sculpture
that achieves beauty by capturing the essential nature and design of the real microbial
world.
